Eger

Eger, one of the most beautiful Baroque towns in Hungary is situated in north-eastern Hungary between the Bükk and Mátra mountains in the valley of the Eger stream. It is 130 kms from Budapest and can be easily reached by M3 and then by motorroad 25. The town,  with a population of almost 70,000 people, is not only the center of Heves County but of the County Archdiocese as well. Its historically important, spectacular city center, with its Baroque buildings, the thermal baths, the legendary hospitality make Eger one of the most popular tourist destinations in Hungary. Although the exact date of the city’s establishment is unknown, the first Hungarian king, St. Stephen founded a bishopric here in the first decades of the millenium. The town achieved lasting fame in the one-month siege of 1552 when Captain Dobó and his 2,000 soldiers along with the legendary activity of the women of Eger successfully defended the strategically vital fortress from the attack of 150,000 Turkish soldiers.  The Cathedral of Eger (Basilica), designed by József Hild in neoclassic style, is the second biggest cathedral in the country. Other famous sights include the Archbishop's Palace, which has been the residency of the Archbishop of Eger since 1804, Dobó Square, the main square of the city, with the Minorite Church. The Minaret is the northernmost Turkish monument in Europe. Eger’s surroundings (e.g. Szépasszony-völgy) display some of the most famous vineyards and wine cellars in Europe producing such world renowned brands of wines as the leányka and the bull’s blood.
